Mount Kailash north face with snow, Kailash Mansarovar Yatra 2027

Thinking about the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra 2027 but not sure where to start? You're not alone. Most first-time yatris get stuck on the same three questions: which route, how much it costs, and whether their body can handle the altitude.

Here's the short answer. In 2027 you can reach Mount Kailash in two ways: the government-run yatra through the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), which works on a lottery, or a guided Nepal-route yatra with Shree Ananta Travels, where there's no lottery and you choose your own batch. The MEA hasn't announced its 2027 dates yet, so if you want fixed dates, booking a guided departure is the surer path.

Will the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra happen in 2027?

Yes, the yatra is expected to run in 2027, and you can already enquire about 2027 departures with Shree Ananta Travels. The MEA's official yatra resumed in 2025 after a five-year gap and ran again from June to August 2026, in 20 batches. Its 2027 notice usually comes out in late April, with only about three weeks to apply. On the Nepal side, the August 2026 floods disrupted some border crossings, so read our Kailash route update for 2027 before you pick a route.

Whichever way you go, the journey covers the same sacred ground:

  • Mount Kailash (6,638 m): the 52 km parikrama around the mountain, usually over three days, crossing Dolma La pass at about 5,630 m
  • Lake Mansarovar (4,590 m): a holy snan or puja at the lake, plus a drive around its shore

Want to plan your dates early? See our Kailash Mansarovar Yatra 2027 packages and pick the batch that suits you.

Which Kailash Mansarovar route is right for you?

The right route depends on three things: your age and fitness, how many days you can take off, and whether you can wait for a government lottery. Here's how the main options compare.

RouteDays (approx.)Trekking effortHow you get a seat
Lipulekh Pass (Uttarakhand)~22HighLottery
Nathu La Pass (Sikkim)~21Low, mostly motorableLottery
Helicopter via Lucknow, Nepalgunj and Simikot10–11Low, plus optional parikramaDirect booking, subject to permits and weather
Overland via Kathmandu and Kyirong~14ModerateDisrupted by Aug 2026 floods; ask for 2027 status
Flight via Lhasa~15ModerateDirect booking, subject to permits
Aerial darshan flight1NoneDirect booking, no China visa needed

Our honest take: if you need fixed dates, are travelling with older parents, or don't want to depend on a lottery, the helicopter route via Lucknow is the most practical choice. It cuts the long road journey and suits senior citizens well. The overland route via Kyirong offers gradual acclimatisation, but it was disrupted by the August 2026 Nepal floods, so ask us about its 2027 status first. Not sure which one is right for you? Ask our team for a route comparison.

One thing to keep in mind. The aerial darshan flight lets you see Kailash from the sky without a China visa, but you won't touch the soil of Tibet or do the parikrama.

If Tibet isn't possible this year, you can also look at our Adi Kailash yatra and other spiritual tours within India.

Who can apply, and how does registration work?

For the MEA yatra, you must be an Indian citizen aged 18 to 70, hold a valid Indian passport, and have a BMI of 25 or below. These were the rules for 2026, and they've stayed largely the same year to year.

MEA yatra checklist (based on 2026 rules):

  • Indian passport valid for at least six months as on 1 September of the yatra year
  • Age between 18 and 70 as on 1 January of the yatra year
  • BMI of 25 or less
  • Medical clearance in Delhi after selection, at the Delhi Heart and Lung Institute and the ITBP Base Hospital

Applications are accepted only online at kmy.gov.in. Selection is by computerised draw, and first-time applicants get priority. In 2026, the MEA announced the yatra on 30 April and closed applications on 19 May. Expect a similarly short window in 2027, so keep your passport and documents ready by March.

OCI cardholders and foreign passport holders can't join the MEA yatra. They can travel with Shree Ananta Travels via Nepal, and our NRI desk handles their China group visa and Tibet permits.

When you book with Shree Ananta Travels, the process is much simpler. You share your passport copy and photos, and our team handles the China group visa and Tibet travel permits. Book 3 to 6 months ahead so the paperwork isn't rushed.

A word of caution: in June 2026, the MEA warned that several pilgrims got stranded in Nepal because their tour operator hadn't secured permits and visas. That's why the operator you choose matters. Never leave India until your visa and Tibet permits are confirmed, and check that your operator is registered and authorised. At Shree Ananta Travels, we take care of the complete group visa and permit paperwork for you, so you know where you stand before you travel.

How much does the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra cost?

In 2026, the MEA yatra cost roughly ₹2.09 lakh per person via Lipulekh and ₹3.31 lakh via Nathu La. The 2027 fees will be published with the official notice, so treat these as a guide, not a quote.

Those figures cover the yatra itself. Budget separately for:

  • Travel to and from Delhi before and after the yatra
  • Warm clothing, trekking shoes and gear
  • Pony and porter hire for the parikrama, if you need help
  • Travel and medical insurance that covers high-altitude evacuation

The MEA doesn't give any subsidy, but some state governments do. Uttar Pradesh, for example, gave ₹1 lakh each to 555 pilgrims in early 2026. Check with your state's religious affairs or tourism department.

Shree Ananta Travels package prices depend on the route, group size, hotel category and month. Get a free quote and our team will share a customised itinerary and pricing within 2 hours, with visa, permits, meals, oxygen, guides and helicopter legs listed clearly.

When is the best time to go?

The yatra season runs from May to September, when the passes are open and the weather is manageable. June and early July usually bring the most stable conditions. Full-moon departures, like Guru Purnima in July, are the most sought-after, so they fill up first.

August overlaps with the monsoon on the Nepal side, which can delay helicopter flights and roads. If you go then, keep one or two buffer days in your plan.

How should you prepare your body for the altitude?

Altitude sickness is the biggest risk on this yatra, not the cold or the walking. Above 5,000 m the air holds roughly half the oxygen you breathe at sea level, so preparation matters more than enthusiasm.

Start 3 months before departure:

  1. Walk 5–6 km daily, building up to brisk walks on stairs or slopes.
  2. Add simple breathing practice like pranayama or anulom-vilom.
  3. Get a full health check-up and discuss altitude medicine with your doctor.
  4. If your BMI is above 25, work on it early. The MEA medical test is strict.

On the yatra itself, walk slowly, drink 3–4 litres of water a day, and never skip an acclimatisation day. Tell your guide at the first sign of a severe headache, breathlessness at rest or confusion. Going down is the only real cure.

Packing essentials:

  • Thermal innerwear, a fleece, and a windproof down jacket
  • Waterproof trekking shoes, already broken in
  • Woollen cap, gloves, sunglasses and SPF 50 sunscreen
  • Personal medicines, a basic first-aid kit and lip balm
  • Photocopies of your passport, visa and permits
