Kailash Mansarovar Yatra 2027 After Nepal Floods: What Is Confirmed?

By Shree Ananta Travels | Kailash Mansarovar Planning Team

If you are planning the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra in 2027, one important question comes first: which route will be available, and when should you start planning?

The flash flood that struck the Bhote Koshi area near the Nepal–China border on 26 August 2026 damaged roads, bridges and infrastructure around Rasuwagadhi. The usual overland route through Rasuwagadhi–Kerung was disrupted, while other crossings have also faced access and operating challenges. As a result, travellers need to look beyond the route names and check which arrangements are actually available.

The complete Kailash Mansarovar Yatra 2027 departure schedule and final route arrangements have not yet been announced. Road repairs do not automatically mean that an international border crossing is operating for pilgrimage groups.

At Shree Ananta Travels, we understand that choosing the right route is an important part of planning this pilgrimage. In this guide, we explain the major route options, the latest reported developments and what you should confirm before booking your 2027 journey.

Kailash Mansarovar Yatra 2027: all major route options at a glance

Kailash Mansarovar Yatra 2027

Major route options and what must be confirmed

1

Kathmandu–Rasuwagadhi–Kerung

Severely affected by late-September 2024 floods. Road restoration does not confirm pilgrimage entry.

2

Kodari–Tatopani–Zhangmu

Traditional overland corridor; regular passenger operations for 2027 remain unconfirmed.

3

Mustang–Korala

Road repair and trade access are not proof of a confirmed Kailash passenger route.

4

Lucknow–Nepalgunj–Simikot–Hilsa

Helicopter-assisted itinerary; flights, snow, border movement and permits need date-specific confirmation.

5

Kathmandu–Nepalgunj–Simikot–Hilsa

Same western border corridor as the Lucknow variant, with a different origin/connection plan.

6

Mainland China / Lhasa–Kailash

Separate entry and permit route; request a fully specified flight and overland itinerary.

7

Government Route via Lipulekh

Official Indian government-organised route; follow the official application notice.

8

Government Route via Nathu La

Official Indian government-organised route; follow the official application notice.

Travellers may hear several route names when comparing Kailash Mansarovar Yatra packages. Some are established pilgrimage itineraries, some are government-organised routes for eligible Indian applicants, and others are only possible alternatives being discussed. They are not all confirmed for 2027. The status column below describes what has been reported or how the route normally works, not a guarantee that a departure is available.

What happened after the Nepal floods?

The flood on 26 August did more than damage one road. It affected bridges, road sections and infrastructure near the Rasuwagadhi border corridor, interrupting movement between Nepal and Tibet.

A few later developments are important, but each needs to be read in context:

· 26 August 2026: The Bhote Koshi flood caused extensive damage in Rasuwa and nearby districts. Nepal’s official disaster updates described damage to roads, bridges, buildings and other critical infrastructure. Read Nepal’s Ministry of Home Affairs Disaster Update ↗.
· 29 September 2026: The Kathmandu Post reported that Rasuwagadhi–Kerung, Tatopani and Korala were all experiencing disruption, although the reasons and conditions differed by crossing. Read the Kathmandu Post Crossing Disruption Report ↗.
· 11 October 2026: A Bailey bridge restored the road link between Rasuwa and Nuwakot after six weeks. That is a meaningful repair milestone, but it does not by itself confirm that the Rasuwagadhi international crossing is open to Kailash tour groups. Read the Kathmandu Post Bailey Bridge Restoration Report ↗.
· 17 October 2026: The Kathmandu Post reported that Nepal was pushing to reopen Tatopani, while China had yet to commit to restoring regular operations. The report also noted the logistical and security concerns affecting that decision. Read the Kathmandu Post Tatopani Reopening Report ↗.
· 2 October 2026: Heavy snowfall disrupted the Hilsa–Taklakot route and Chinese authorities suspended Kailash pilgrimage movement at that time. The reports expected movement to resume after snow clearance, but a past reopening expectation is not a guarantee of 2027 access. Read the Nepal News Hilsa Snowfall Report ↗.

The key lesson is simple: a road repair, a temporary border movement arrangement, and a confirmed 2027 pilgrimage departure are three different things. Each needs its own verification.

Which route could be used for Kailash Mansarovar Yatra 2027?

There is no single route that should be described as guaranteed for every traveller in 2027. Below are the major route families that pilgrims may encounter while researching private tours and the separate government-organised Indian yatra. Each has a different starting point, transport plan, permit process and operating risk.

1. Kathmandu–Rasuwagadhi–Kerung (Gyirong): the usual overland route

A common private-tour plan starts in Kathmandu, travels north through Syabrubesi and Timure to Rasuwagadhi, crosses into Kerung/Gyirong on the Tibet side, and continues overland towards Saga, Lake Mansarovar and Darchen, the starting point for the Kailash parikrama.

The 26 August 2026 flood severely damaged the approach corridor. On 11 October, The Kathmandu Post reported that a Bailey bridge restored the road link between Rasuwa and Nuwakot, but the same report said more work was still planned around Syafrubesi. Earlier reporting also described the road to the Rasuwagadhi border as difficult. A repaired district road is not proof that regular pilgrimage crossing has resumed.

Before considering this route for 2027, ask whether the border is accepting the relevant passenger movement, whether the approach road is usable for the full tour, whether the required Tibet permits can be arranged and whether the return journey is also confirmed.

2. Kathmandu–Kodari/Tatopani–Zhangmu–Nyalam: the traditional Friendship Highway

This overland corridor runs from Kathmandu towards Kodari/Tatopani on the Nepal side, crosses to Zhangmu/Khasa on the Tibet side, and continues through Nyalam and onward towards Saga, Lake Mansarovar and Darchen. It is a traditional route, but that history does not confirm current operating permission.

On 17 October 2026, The Kathmandu Post reported that Nepal was pressing to reopen Tatopani while China had not committed to restoring regular operations. Security concerns, logistical challenges and recurring landslides were among the issues cited. The report also discussed Korala and Rasuwagadhi in the wider context of Nepal–China crossings.

For a 2027 departure, confirm that the crossing is operating for pilgrims, the immigration arrangements are in place on both sides, transport can reach the border and a complete itinerary with accommodation and return arrangements is feasible.

3. Kathmandu/Pokhara–Jomsom–Mustang–Korala: a possibility to investigate

Korala is in Nepal’s Mustang district, along the northern border with Tibet. The approach usually involves travel through Nepal’s western road corridor towards Jomsom and Upper Mustang before reaching the Korala area. It has been mentioned in discussions about alternative cross-border access, but it should not be presented as a ready-made Kailash pilgrimage route without evidence of the required passenger operations.

The Jomsom–Korala road was blocked by landslides and heavy snowfall in late September 2026. A report on 7 October described repair work after flooding and landslides had disrupted multiple parts of the Beni–Jomsom–Korala road. Road repairs and cross-border trade access do not by themselves confirm a route for international pilgrims heading to Kailash.

4. Lucknow–Nepalgunj–Simikot–Hilsa–Taklakot: the helicopter-assisted route

This is the Lucknow route mentioned by many Kailash Mansarovar tour operators. A commonly offered itinerary starts with travel from Lucknow to Nepalgunj, followed by a flight from Nepalgunj to Simikot, a helicopter transfer from Simikot to Hilsa, border formalities, and onward road travel to Taklakot (Purang) in Tibet. From there, the tour generally continues towards Lake Mansarovar and Darchen, with the Kailash parikrama included according to the itinerary.

The precise sequence, travel time, accommodation and return transfers vary by operator and package. The route is separate from the Rasuwagadhi–Kerung and Kodari–Tatopani overland crossings, but it still depends on the Hilsa border, weather-sensitive flights and helicopter transfers.

Heavy snowfall disrupted the Hilsa–Taklakot route in early October 2026, when reporting said Chinese authorities had temporarily suspended Kailash pilgrimage movement. The published expectation at that time was that movement might resume after snow clearance; that was not a 2027 commitment.

Based on our route assessment, the Lucknow helicopter-assisted journey via Nepalgunj, Simikot and Hilsa is an option worth enquiring about for 2027. Review our detailed Kailash Mansarovar Yatra via Lucknow (10 Nights / 11 Days) itinerary to understand day-to-day flight sectors, Simikot altitude acclimation and helicopter logistics. Travellers should confirm departure dates, flight and helicopter availability, permits, border operations and booking conditions before making a payment.

5. Kathmandu–Nepalgunj–Simikot–Hilsa: the same western corridor from another starting point

Not every traveller begins in Lucknow. Depending on the package, a traveller may reach Nepalgunj from Kathmandu or make a separate connection before continuing to Simikot and Hilsa. From Simikot, the remaining route may involve helicopter transfer or other authorised arrangements, depending on the tour design and operating conditions.

This is not a separate international border from the Lucknow route; both use the Simikot–Hilsa corridor. The difference is the starting point and the connections arranged before reaching western Nepal.

Ask the operator to spell out every transfer, the included flights, luggage limits, overnight stays, contingency arrangements and the plan if weather prevents a flight or helicopter movement. Confirm the border and permit position for the actual travel dates.

6. Mainland China / Lhasa entry, then overland to Kailash

Another option discussed by private tour operators is to enter mainland China through an available gateway, travel onwards to Lhasa by the transport specified in the itinerary, and continue overland through Tibet towards Saga, Lake Mansarovar and Darchen. Some itineraries are described simply as a Lhasa route, while others specify the mainland-China gateway.

This option avoids entering Tibet through Nepal’s Rasuwagadhi or Tatopani land crossings, but it involves a different international itinerary and entry process. Flights, transit requirements, Chinese entry rules, Tibet travel permits, onward transport and return arrangements can depend on the traveller’s nationality and the package offered.

Do not assume that a flight connection or a Tibet permit is available simply because a similar itinerary operated in a previous year. Ask for a written route plan with the arrival airport, connection details, permits, ground transport, accommodation and contingency arrangements clearly listed. You can also compare our Kailash Mansarovar Yatra via Lhasa (14 Nights / 15 Days) package for full flight gateways and Tibet travel permit schedules.

7. Government-organised Kailash Manasarovar Yatra via Lipulekh Pass

Lipulekh Pass in Uttarakhand is one of the two official routes used by the Government of India’s Ministry of External Affairs to organise the Kailash Manasarovar Yatra. It has a separate government-run application and selection process, with its own itinerary, eligibility, medical and logistical arrangements.

This route should not be confused with a privately operated Kathmandu or helicopter package. For the 2027 season, eligible Indian applicants should follow the official Government of India Kailash Manasarovar Yatra Portal (kmy.gov.in) ↗ and relevant government announcements. The existence of the route does not mean the 2027 application window or dates have already been confirmed.

8. Government-organised Kailash Manasarovar Yatra via Nathu La

Nathu La in Sikkim is the second official Government of India route identified by the Ministry of External Affairs. Like Lipulekh, it is governed by the official application, selection and operating process rather than being a standard private Nepal-based itinerary.

Indian pilgrims interested in this option should follow the government’s instructions for eligibility, registration, medical requirements, dates and fees. A private tour operator should not imply it can guarantee a place on the government-organised route.

The Ministry of External Affairs confirmed the two official routes in its parliamentary response dated 2 April 2026. Read the Official MEA Parliamentary Response (PDF) ↗.

Which route should you choose for 2027?

The first step is to identify the type of journey that suits you: a Nepal overland route, a helicopter-assisted route via Hilsa, a Tibet-side itinerary entering through Lhasa, or the separate government-organised yatra for eligible Indian applicants. The routes are not interchangeable, and the lowest advertised price may not include the same transport or contingency arrangements.

When contacting a tour operator, ask for the full route from your starting city back to your return point. Get written confirmation of the current operating status, permit process, inclusions, departure status and cancellation terms. If the operator is still waiting for official permission or route confirmation, the itinerary should be described as provisional.

Will Kailash Mansarovar Yatra take place in 2027?

The official schedule for Kailash Mansarovar Yatra 2027 is still awaited. The final departure dates and available routes will depend on border operations, permits and travel arrangements.

At Shree Ananta Travels, we recommend starting your travel planning early. Contact our team to discuss your preferred travel dates, available route options and booking requirements before making a decision.

That does not mean you cannot start preparing. You can review route options, check your passport, discuss your preferred travel window and ask operators how they will communicate changes. The important point is to distinguish between:

· An enquiry: you are asking about options and receiving updates.
· A priority or interest list: your details are recorded for future information; this does not necessarily reserve a seat.
· A provisional booking: specific written conditions apply, and the itinerary may depend on permits or approvals.
· A confirmed departure: the operator should be able to explain in writing what is confirmed, what remains conditional and what the cancellation or rescheduling terms are.

At Shree Ananta Travels, we believe travellers should understand these distinctions before committing money. If a route or date is still uncertain, it should be described that way.

When is the best time for Kailash Mansarovar Yatra 2027?

In a typical year, private Kailash Mansarovar trips generally run during the warmer months, often within a broad May-to-September window. That is a general pattern, not a confirmed 2027 calendar. Actual dates depend on the season declared by the relevant authorities, the permitted route, weather and the tour’s operating arrangements.

A few planning points are worth remembering:

· May and June: These can be popular months in a normal season, so permit timelines, group availability and crowding deserve attention. Do not book non-refundable onward travel until the required arrangements are clear.
· July and August: Monsoon conditions can affect roads and access in Nepal, while the Kailash region has its own weather considerations. The impact differs by route.
· Late August and September: Some travellers prefer this period for the conditions they have experienced in previous seasons, but late-season snow and route disruptions are possible. The October 2026 Hilsa closure is a reminder to check current conditions rather than rely on past patterns.

Choose dates around the confirmed operating window, your available leave and the route you can realistically take. A “best month” recommendation is less useful than a viable, safely planned itinerary.

Could the 2027 package price change?

It is possible for route changes to affect the cost of a tour. A different entry point may require additional flights, helicopter transfers, transport, overnight stays or more complicated logistics. Fuel, exchange rates, accommodation, staffing and permit-related costs can also influence the final quotation.

However, possible cost pressures are not a confirmed price increase. As of the date of this article, we have not located an official final price schedule for the 2027 season. Be cautious of anyone presenting a speculative amount as a fixed or official price.

Before paying, request a written quotation that lists:

· Transport and transfers, including which flights or helicopter legs are included.
· Accommodation and meals.
· Visa and permit arrangements, and any exclusions.
· Support during the Kailash parikrama and the emergency plan.
· Taxes, additional expenses and any potential surcharges.
· Deposit, cancellation, refund and route-change terms.

A transparent quote should make it clear whether a price is final, provisional or subject to change if the operating route changes.

Indian citizens travelling through Nepal should read the Embassy of India’s official guidance on permits, insurance, medical preparation and high-altitude travel before departure. Rules can differ by nationality and itinerary, so confirm the requirements that apply to your own case.

How to prepare while the 2027 route is being finalised

You do not have to wait to do every part of your planning. Some preparation can begin now without assuming that a particular crossing will open.

Check your documents. Review passport validity and ask which visa and permit steps apply to your nationality and proposed route. Do not assume that the paperwork for one itinerary is interchangeable with another.

Prepare for the altitude. The Kailash region is high and the parikrama is physically demanding. Build walking fitness gradually and seek medical advice about your own suitability for high-altitude travel. Fitness does not eliminate the risk of altitude illness.

Plan for delays. Allow spare days around the key transfers, particularly where flights, helicopters, snow or remote roads are involved. Avoid tight onward connections.

Keep your budget flexible. Set aside an emergency allowance and read your insurance policy carefully. Check for high-altitude trekking, evacuation, trip interruption and extended-stay coverage rather than assuming they are included.

Keep following verified updates. A social media post or an old itinerary may describe a past arrangement, not the current border status. Look for the date of every update and ask your operator what has changed since it was published.
